	Echinopsen gehören zu den best geeignetsten Pflanzen für das Wohnungsfenster. Leider haben sie immer noch den schlechten Ruf als sogenannter Bauernkaktus. Echinopsen waren bereits früh auf den Fensterbänken vertreten vielleicht weil sie so robust sind vielleicht weil sei sich durch Kindl, das sind bereits mit Wurzeln versehene Ableger der Pflanze die diese selbst bildet, leicht vermehren lassen. Wer weiß? Vielleicht sind es auch die herrlichen Blüten die regelmäßig im Sommer erscheinen und zum Teil wunderbar duften. Leider blühen die Pflanzen nur an einem Tag und das leider meist nachts. Aber das hat wenigstens den Vorteil das die meisten von uns dann nicht arbeiten müssen.


	One of the most useful plants for inside the house is Echinopsis. It's a pity that they still have that bad image as a farmer's cactus (so we say in Germany). Echinopsis live on our windows since a long time may be hundreds of years. May be cause you can't get them down. Or may be cause they are so easy to multiply with the little cacti that grow on their trunk. You put them into the ground they will grow, that's it. May be they will not flower so rich but they will grow. The main reason is surly the wonderful flower of this plants. They come every early summer and some of them smell marvellous. You can taste in all over the house. The only problem is that they flower in the night. But may be this is no problem cause the most of us have not to work at this time.

Die “Königin der Nacht” ist eigendlich ein rankender Cereus aber ist diese Echinopsis nicht auch königlich?


	The so called “Queen of the Night” is a cereus but isn’t this like a queen too?

In diesem Jahr ( 2002) blühte die Pflanze bereits am frühen Nachmittag.
	This year (2002) the plant flowered on the early afternoon.



	Einige Kakteen brauchen nicht viel Pflege…wirklich nicht. Dieser ist ein gutes Beispiel und darüber zu reden ist vielleicht eine interessante Geschichte. Vor zwei Jahre bekam ich ein Geburtstagsgeschenk, einen Kaktus. Meine Freunde wissen dass ich Kakteen mag also bekomme ich von Zeit zu Zeit einen. Normalerweise behalte ich sie nicht weil ich nicht genug Platz habe. Ich finde immer einen Pflanzenfreundkollegen der sie nimmt. Nun…dieses Mal stellte ich ihn auf die Fensterbank in meinem Badezimmer (Abb.6) und…ich vergas ihn. Ich vergas ihn für ungefähr zwei Jahre. Sicher, manchmal warf ich einen Blick darauf und wunderte mich, dass die Pflanze gut aussah. Ich dachte, dass sie ab und zu etwas Spritzwasser von der Dusche bekäme und die feuchte Luft den Rest mache. Es ist ein Südfenster und im Winter ist es nicht zu warm in diesem Raum. Diese Bedingungen scheinen nicht zu schlecht für Echinomastus macdowellii zu sein.

Ich denke nicht daran dies zu ändern, vielleicht ist es das was hilft damit dieser Kaktus überlebt und wer weiß, vielleicht blüht er noch.



	Some cacti don’t need much care…really not. This one is a good example and may be to talk about it is an interesting story. Two years ago I got a birthday present, a cactus. My friends know that I like them so I get some from time to time. Normally I don’t keep them because I have not that much room for further cacti. I always find a fellow plant friend who takes it. Well, this time I put the plant on the sealing in my bathroom (Abb.6) and…forgot it. I forgot it for two years. Sure from time to time I had a look and I was wondering that the plant looks fine. I thought that the water from the shower wets it from time to time and that wet air could did the rest. It’s a south window and in winter it ‘s not to warm in this room. This condition seems not too bad for Echinomastus macdowellii. I am not thinking about to change that, may be that’s what helps this cactus to survive and who knows, may be it will start flowering.
